Vesicovaginal Fistula Repair
An opening between the bladder and vagina causes constant leaking of urine. Surgery aims to close the opening and stop the leaking.

Closing an abnormal opening between the bladder and vagina
A vesicovaginal fistula is an abnormal passage between the bladder and the vagina. It causes urine to leak continuously from the vagina. It may follow a hysterectomy, a difficult birth, radiation treatment or other surgery.
Constant leaking can be distressing and isolating. It is a recognised problem with established treatments.
Dr Jasdev assesses the fistula carefully and plans the repair with the right timing and approach.
Symptoms understood first
Leaking, bulging or discomfort is assessed carefully, including how much it affects your daily life.
Simpler options considered too
Pelvic floor exercises, physiotherapy and other treatments without surgery are discussed alongside operations.
Recovery planned in advance
You will know what to expect after the procedure and when your review is due.
What fistula repair may offer
- A careful assessment of the fistula’s size and position
- Repair through the vagina or tummy, as suits the fistula
- A clear plan for catheter care and recovery
How your care is planned
Each stage is explained so you understand the cause of your symptoms, your options and what recovery involves. You can take time to decide.
Confirm the fistula with a dye test and cystoscopy
Plan the timing and approach of repair
Repair the fistula and keep a catheter while it heals
How repair works
Small fistulas sometimes heal with a catheter alone. Most need surgery, through the vagina or the tummy, to separate and close the layers. Healthy tissue may be used as an extra layer. A catheter stays in for one to two weeks afterwards. Timing matters. Some fistulas are repaired straight away, and others after a few weeks, once the tissues have settled.
Who may benefit
Women with continuous leaking of urine from the vagina, especially after pelvic surgery, radiation or a difficult birth. It also helps women whose leaking began some weeks after surgery, which can happen.
What to expect
Tests are arranged first to map the fistula. After surgery, you will go home with a catheter. A dye test checks the repair before the catheter is removed.
