Vaginal Hysterectomy with Pelvic Floor Repair

For a prolapsed womb, removing it through the vagina and repairing the supporting tissues can ease symptoms without any cuts on the tummy.

Treating womb prolapse through the vagina

When the womb drops into the vagina, it can cause a bulge, a dragging feeling, and bladder or bowel problems. A vaginal hysterectomy removes the womb through the vagina. The pelvic floor is then repaired, often with front or back wall repair and support for the upper vagina.

This approach avoids a tummy wound and usually allows a quicker recovery than open surgery.

Dr Jasdev discusses options that keep the womb, as well as hysterectomy, so you can choose.

01

Symptoms understood first

Leaking, bulging or discomfort is assessed carefully, including how much it affects your daily life.

02

Simpler options considered too

Pelvic floor exercises, physiotherapy and other treatments without surgery are discussed alongside operations.

03

Recovery planned in advance

You will know what to expect after the procedure and when your review is due.

What this surgery may offer

  • Relief from womb prolapse symptoms
  • Repair of weakened walls in the same operation
  • No tummy wound

How your care is planned

Each stage is explained so you understand the cause of your symptoms, your options and what recovery involves. You can take time to decide.

01

Examine and grade the prolapse

02

Discuss pessaries, repair that keeps the womb, or hysterectomy

03

Perform the surgery and support your recovery

How the surgery works

Under anaesthetic, the womb is freed and removed through the vagina. The upper vagina is then supported, often by attaching it to strong ligaments. The front and back walls may be repaired if they are also weak. The operation usually takes one to two hours. A cystoscopy may be done at the end to check the bladder. Dissolvable stitches are used, so there is nothing to remove later.

Who may benefit

Women with womb prolapse causing symptoms who have completed their family, especially if the front or back walls are also weak. Women who prefer to keep the womb can discuss other repairs or a pessary first.

What to expect

Most women stay one to two nights. A catheter may be used for a short time. Recovery takes around six weeks, and you should avoid heavy lifting and sex until you are told it is safe. Gentle walking from the first day helps recovery. Pelvic floor exercises, once healing allows, help protect the repair over the long term.
