Treating stress incontinence with stitches instead of tape

Burch colposuspension treats stress urinary incontinence. Stitches are placed beside the neck of the bladder and attached to strong ligaments behind the pubic bone. This lifts and supports the area so it closes better under pressure.

For women who prefer to avoid synthetic tape, this is a well established choice.

Dr Jasdev explains how colposuspension compares with a sling and other options for you.

01

Symptoms understood first

Leaking, bulging or discomfort is assessed carefully, including how much it affects your daily life.

02

Simpler options considered too

Pelvic floor exercises, physiotherapy and other treatments without surgery are discussed alongside operations.

03

Recovery planned in advance

You will know what to expect after the procedure and when your review is due.

What colposuspension may offer

  • Fewer leaks with coughing, sneezing or exercise
  • No synthetic tape or mesh
  • A choice that suits women who prefer to avoid tape

How your care is planned

Each stage is explained so you understand the cause of your symptoms, your options and what recovery involves. You can take time to decide.

01

Confirm stress incontinence with a bladder diary and tests

02

Perform colposuspension by keyhole or open surgery

03

Check bladder emptying and review your recovery

How the surgery works

Under general anaesthetic, the space in front of the bladder is reached through keyhole cuts or a small bikini line cut. Stitches lift the tissue beside the bladder neck. A catheter may be used for a short time afterwards. The operation usually takes one to two hours.

Who may benefit

Women with stress incontinence who have not improved enough with pelvic floor exercises and prefer an option without tape. It also suits women having other pelvic surgery at the same time.

What to expect

Most women stay one to three nights. Recovery takes four to six weeks, and heavy lifting should be avoided. Some women find the bladder takes a little time to empty well afterwards.
