Anterior Vaginal Repair – Cystocele

When the bladder bulges into the front wall of the vagina, a repair through the vagina can restore support and ease discomfort, with no cuts on the tummy.

Restoring support to the front wall of the vagina

A cystocele is a prolapse of the bladder into the front wall of the vagina. It can cause a bulge, a heavy dragging feeling, difficulty emptying the bladder or frequent infections. Anterior repair tightens the supporting tissue between the bladder and the vagina.

Prolapse is common, especially after childbirth and menopause. Many women put up with symptoms for years before asking for help.

Dr Jasdev discusses physiotherapy and pessaries (supportive devices placed in the vagina) as well as surgery.

01

Symptoms understood first

Leaking, bulging or discomfort is assessed carefully, including how much it affects your daily life.

02

Simpler options considered too

Pelvic floor exercises, physiotherapy and other treatments without surgery are discussed alongside operations.

03

Recovery planned in advance

You will know what to expect after the procedure and when your review is due.

What anterior repair may offer

  • Relief from the bulge and dragging feeling
  • Better bladder emptying for some women
  • Surgery through the vagina, with no tummy wound

How your care is planned

Each stage is explained so you understand the cause of your symptoms, your options and what recovery involves. You can take time to decide.

01

Examine and grade the prolapse

02

Discuss physiotherapy, a pessary or surgery

03

Repair the front wall and support your recovery

How the surgery works

Under anaesthetic, a cut is made in the front wall of the vagina. The weakened tissue under the bladder is folded and stitched to give firmer support. Excess skin may be trimmed, and the wall is closed with dissolvable stitches. Your own tissue is used rather than mesh.

Who may benefit

Women with a bothersome bladder prolapse who have not improved enough with physiotherapy or a pessary, or who prefer surgical treatment. If you also leak urine, this is assessed at the same time, as it may need separate treatment.

What to expect

Most women stay one night. A catheter may be used for a short time. Recovery takes around six weeks, avoiding heavy lifting and sex during this time. You will have a review visit to check healing. Pelvic floor exercises after healing help protect the repair.
