Ovarian Cysts

Most cysts on the ovary are harmless and settle on their own. Careful scanning shows which ones need monitoring or treatment.

Knowing which cysts need attention and which can be watched

An ovarian cyst is a fluid filled sac on or in the ovary. Many form as part of the normal cycle and disappear without treatment. Others, such as endometriomas or dermoid cysts, may need monitoring or surgery.

Being told you have a cyst can be frightening. Most are not cancer, and many need no treatment.

Dr Jasdev explains what type of cyst you have, and plans any treatment with your fertility in mind.

01

Your symptoms taken seriously

Your history, symptoms and any past results are reviewed before a plan is suggested.

02

Options explained clearly

You will hear the benefits, limits and risks of each option, including simply monitoring.

03

Care that stays connected

Reviews are planned around your diagnosis, how treatment is working and any plans for pregnancy.

What cyst care gives you

  • A clear description of the type of cyst
  • Monitoring without unnecessary surgery
  • Surgery that preserves the ovary when treatment is needed

How your care is planned

Each step is designed to answer what is causing your symptoms, what matters most to you, and what to do next. The plan is reviewed as results come in.

01

Review your symptoms and scan findings

02

Arrange a repeat or detailed ultrasound, with blood tests if needed

03

Agree monitoring or surgery

Types of cyst and treatment

Functional cysts are linked to ovulation and usually go within a few cycles. Endometriomas are linked to endometriosis. Dermoid cysts contain different types of tissue. Larger, persistent or unusual cysts may be removed by laparoscopy, keeping as much healthy ovary as possible.

Who may benefit

Women with a cyst found on scan, pelvic pain or pressure, or a cyst that has not gone away. Sudden severe pain may mean a twisted or burst cyst and needs urgent care.

What to expect

Your scan results are reviewed, and a repeat scan is often arranged after a few weeks. Blood tests may be done for certain cysts. If surgery is advised, the approach and recovery are explained in detail.

Most women arrive with a few questions in mind. These common ones can help you prepare.

Is my cyst cancer?

02

Will it go away on its own?

03

Do I need surgery?

04

Will removing it affect my fertility?

Your questions about ovarian cysts

What is an ovarian cyst?

It is a fluid filled sac on or in the ovary. Most are harmless, and many go away without treatment.

Who should seek advice?

Women with a cyst on scan, especially if it is large, persistent or causing symptoms. Sudden severe pain needs urgent care.

What tests are needed?

A pelvic ultrasound, sometimes repeated, and in some cases blood tests or an MRI.

Is treatment painful or risky?

Monitoring involves only scans. If surgery is needed, keyhole surgery is usual, and its risks and recovery are explained first.

Why see Dr Jasdev for ovarian cysts?

He avoids surgery when it is not needed, and protects ovarian tissue when it is, with your fertility in mind.
