Sperm Freezing
Sperm can be frozen and stored for future treatment, whether before medical treatment or surgery, or as a backup for the day of IVF.
Fertility Preservation
Storing sperm so it is ready when you need it
Sperm freezing, or sperm cryopreservation, stores semen samples at very low temperatures. Frozen sperm can later be used for IUI, IVF or ICSI. Sperm retrieved surgically can also be frozen.
If you are facing illness or treatment, arranging this quickly can bring real peace of mind.
Dr Jasdev helps arrange freezing promptly when medical treatment is about to begin.
Both partners are assessed
Male factors play a part in many couples’ fertility problems, so sperm health is checked early.
Results explained clearly
You will understand what each result means and which options follow from it.
A plan for you as a couple
Male and female findings are considered together, so decisions make sense for both of you.
What sperm freezing gives you
- Protection for fertility before cancer or other treatment
- A backup sample if giving one on the day may be difficult
- Flexibility for couples living or working apart
How your care is planned
Each stage answers what is happening, why it matters, and what comes next for you as a couple. The plan is reviewed as results come in.
Discuss your reasons and check your general health
Complete infection screening and give samples
Freeze and store the samples securely
How sperm freezing works
You provide a semen sample at the clinic after a short break from ejaculation. The sample is checked, mixed with a protective fluid and frozen in liquid nitrogen. Several samples may be stored if time allows. A small test thaw may be done to check how well the sperm survive.
Who may benefit
Men about to have chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery that may affect fertility. It also helps men who travel often, those who find it hard to produce a sample on the day, and men with falling sperm counts.
What to expect
Blood tests for infections are done first, as they are required for storage. Samples can often be given within days. You will sign consent forms covering storage time and future use.
How Dr Jasdev works with you
He looks at male and female fertility together and explains results without jargon or judgement. Advice follows current evidence and your priorities as a couple. You will always know why a test or treatment is being suggested. Men and couples see him from Kuala Lumpur and across Malaysia, and some travel from neighbouring countries.
What to bring to your appointment
Bringing earlier results helps Dr Jasdev avoid repeating tests and focus on your next step. If you cannot find everything, bring what you have.
- Any previous semen analysis
- Details of planned medical treatment and its start date
- Identification for the consent forms
What men often ask about sperm freezing

How long can sperm be stored?
Will frozen sperm work as well as fresh?
Your questions about sperm freezing
What is sperm freezing?
It is the storage of semen samples at very low temperatures, so the sperm can be used in future fertility treatment.
Who is it suitable for?
Men facing treatment that may affect fertility, those who need a backup for the day of IVF, and men with falling sperm counts.
What tests are needed first?
Blood tests for infections such as HIV and hepatitis are required before storage. The sample itself is checked when it is frozen.
Is it uncomfortable or risky?
Giving a sample is private and simple, and there are no physical risks. Some sperm do not survive thawing, which is why more than one sample may be advised.
Why see Dr Jasdev for sperm freezing?
He helps arrange freezing promptly when time matters, and explains how the samples may be used in future.
