Sperm DNA Fragmentation Testing

This test checks for damage to the genetic material inside sperm. It can help explain miscarriage or failed IVF when a standard semen test looks normal.

Male Fertility

For men and couples

Looking beyond sperm count at the quality of the DNA inside

Sperm DNA fragmentation means breaks or damage in the DNA carried by sperm. A standard semen analysis cannot detect it. In some studies, high levels have been linked with lower fertilisation, poorer embryo growth and miscarriage.

When results so far look normal, this test can add another piece to the picture.

Dr Jasdev explains when the test is useful and what can be done if damage levels are high.

01

Both partners are assessed

Male factors play a part in many couples’ fertility problems, so sperm health is checked early.

02

Results explained clearly

You will understand what each result means and which options follow from it.

03

A plan for you as a couple

Male and female findings are considered together, so decisions make sense for both of you.

What the test can give you

  • Information that a standard semen test cannot provide
  • Guidance on lifestyle changes and treatable causes
  • Help in choosing between IVF approaches

How your care is planned

Each stage answers what is happening, why it matters, and what comes next for you as a couple. The plan is reviewed as results come in.

01

Review semen results, health and past treatment

02

Provide a sample for DNA testing

03

Discuss the results and any changes

How the test works

A semen sample is collected in the same way as for a standard analysis. The lab uses specialised methods to measure the share of sperm with damaged DNA. Causes of high levels include smoking, heat, infection, a varicocele and older age. It is one of several tests that may help, and it is not needed for every couple.

Who may benefit

Couples with recurrent miscarriage, repeated IVF failure or unexplained infertility. It may also help men with a varicocele or other known risk factors for sperm damage.

What to expect

Giving the sample is simple and private. Results usually take one to two weeks. If levels are high, options may include lifestyle changes, treating a cause, a shorter abstinence time or a different IVF approach.

How Dr Jasdev works with you

He looks at male and female fertility together and explains results without jargon or judgement. Advice follows current evidence and your priorities as a couple. You will always know why a test or treatment is being suggested. Men and couples see him from Kuala Lumpur and across Malaysia, and some travel from neighbouring countries.

What to bring to your appointment

Bringing earlier results helps Dr Jasdev avoid repeating tests and focus on your next step. If you cannot find everything, bring what you have.

  • Previous semen analysis reports
  • Details of smoking, heat exposure and medicines
  • Records of any miscarriages or IVF cycles
Patient questions

What men often ask

Men often feel unsure what to ask about sperm health. These common questions are a good place to start.

01

Could sperm DNA damage explain our miscarriages?

02

Can DNA damage be reduced?

03

Will ICSI get around the problem?

04

How reliable is the test?

Your questions about sperm DNA testing

What is sperm DNA fragmentation testing?

It measures how much of the DNA inside sperm is damaged, which a standard semen analysis does not show.

Who should consider it?

Couples with recurrent miscarriage, repeated IVF failure or unexplained infertility, and men with known risk factors.

How should I prepare?

Prepare as for a semen analysis, usually with two to five days without ejaculation.

Is it uncomfortable or risky?

No. The sample is collected privately, and there are no physical risks.

Why see Dr Jasdev for this test?

He uses the test when it is likely to change your plan, and explains the options clearly if damage levels are high.

How do I book?

Call or WhatsApp the clinic to arrange the test or a consultation.

This page is general information and does not replace a consultation. Whether a test or treatment suits you, and its risks and timing, should be discussed with Dr Jasdev based on your own history.
