Ovarian Cyst Surgery

When a cyst needs removing, careful keyhole surgery keeps as much healthy ovary as possible, protecting egg reserve for a future pregnancy.

Fertility Preserving Gynaecological Surgery

Surgical care

Removing a cyst while protecting your eggs

The ovaries hold your egg supply, so surgery on them needs a gentle approach. Cystectomy removes the cyst and leaves the healthy ovary behind. Many cysts do not need surgery at all and can be watched with scans.

If you are planning a family, it is natural to worry about any operation on your ovaries.

Dr Jasdev only recommends surgery when the benefits clearly outweigh the effect on egg reserve.

01

Careful assessment before surgery

Scans, symptoms and past operations are reviewed, so surgery is only suggested when it is likely to help.

02

Fertility kept in mind

If you hope to conceive in future, surgery is planned to protect your womb, tubes and ovaries as far as possible.

03

Clear recovery guidance

You will know what recovery involves, when to return to normal activities and when your review is due.

What this approach gives you

  • Surgery only when it is truly needed
  • A gentle technique that protects ovarian tissue
  • Advice on fertility timing afterwards

How your care is planned

Each stage is explained so you know why surgery is being considered, what it involves and how recovery will go. You can take time to decide.

01

Assess the cyst type and your egg reserve

02

Remove the cyst by laparoscopy if needed

03

Review the results and plan your fertility steps

How the surgery works

Under general anaesthetic, small instruments are passed through keyhole cuts. The cyst is separated from the healthy ovary and removed. Bleeding is controlled with stitches or as little heat as possible. The cyst is sent for laboratory testing. Before surgery, blood tests and scans help confirm that the cyst is likely to be benign.

Who may benefit

Women hoping to conceive who have a large, persistent, painful or unusual cyst, or a cyst that may interfere with fertility treatment. Small functional cysts, which come and go with the cycle, usually need no surgery at all.

What to expect

Most women go home the same day or the next. Recovery takes one to two weeks. You can usually try to conceive once you have recovered, unless you are advised otherwise.
