Semen Analysis
A laboratory test of a semen sample measures sperm count, movement and shape. It is simple, private and one of the first tests in any fertility check.
Male Fertility
A simple test that shows how well sperm are working
A semen analysis checks the volume of the sample, how many sperm there are, how well they swim and their shape. The results are compared with reference values from the World Health Organization.
Many men feel awkward about giving a sample. The process is private and handled routinely by the clinic team.
Dr Jasdev explains what your numbers mean and whether a repeat test is needed.
Both partners are assessed
Male factors play a part in many couples’ fertility problems, so sperm health is checked early.
Results explained clearly
You will understand what each result means and which options follow from it.
A plan for you as a couple
Male and female findings are considered together, so decisions make sense for both of you.
What the test gives you
- A clear picture of sperm count, movement and shape
- Early answers that save time for you as a couple
- Guidance on whether more tests or treatment are needed
How your care is planned
Each stage answers what is happening, why it matters, and what comes next for you as a couple. The plan is reviewed as results come in.
Avoid ejaculation for two to five days beforehand
Provide a sample in a private room at the clinic
Review the results and any next steps
How the test works
The sample is collected by masturbation into a sterile pot. It is examined in the lab within an hour. Results are usually ready in a few days. Because sperm counts vary naturally, an abnormal result is often repeated after a few weeks.
Who may benefit
Any man whose partner is having difficulty conceiving, ideally at the start of the assessment. It is also used to check results after a vasectomy, and before sperm freezing.
What to expect
You will be given simple instructions in advance. The collection itself takes only a few minutes. Your results are explained at your review visit, together with what they mean for your plans as a couple.
How Dr Jasdev works with you
He looks at male and female fertility together and explains results without jargon or judgement. Advice follows current evidence and your priorities as a couple. You will always know why a test or treatment is being suggested. Men and couples see him from Kuala Lumpur and across Malaysia, and some travel from neighbouring countries.
What to bring to your appointment
Bringing earlier results helps Dr Jasdev avoid repeating tests and focus on your next step. If you cannot find everything, bring what you have.
- The instructions about abstaining for two to five days
- Details of any recent fever or illness
- A list of medicines and supplements
What men often ask
Men often feel unsure what to ask about sperm health. These common questions are a good place to start.
What counts as a normal result?
Can I collect the sample at home?
Why might the test need repeating?
What if no sperm are seen?
Your questions about semen analysis
What is a semen analysis?
It is a lab test of a semen sample that measures sperm count, movement and shape.
Who needs one?
Men whose partner is having difficulty conceiving, and men preparing for sperm freezing or checking results after a vasectomy.
How should I prepare?
Avoid ejaculation for two to five days before the test. Tell the clinic about any recent fever, as this can affect sperm for a few months.
Is it uncomfortable or risky?
No. The sample is collected privately, and there are no physical risks.
Why see Dr Jasdev for your results?
He explains your results in context, alongside your partner’s tests, and advises on the right next step.
How do I book?
Call or WhatsApp the clinic to arrange a time. Ask the team whether collecting at home is possible, as the sample must reach the lab within an hour.
This page is general information and does not replace a consultation. Whether a test or treatment suits you, and its risks and timing, should be discussed with Dr Jasdev based on your own history.
