Assisted Hatching
A small opening is made in the embryo's outer shell before transfer, which may help it attach to the womb. It is considered only in selected cases.
Genetic Testing & Advanced IVF
Helping the embryo break out of its shell in selected cases
Embryos are surrounded by a protective shell called the zona pellucida. To implant, the embryo must hatch out of it. In assisted hatching, the embryologist thins or opens the shell with a laser before transfer.
It sounds helpful, but research has not shown that it increases births for most couples.
Dr Jasdev considers it only when there is a specific reason, and explains the evidence first.
A plan that starts with your results
Your age, history, test results and goals are reviewed before any treatment is suggested.
Clear reasons for each step
You will know why a test or medicine is recommended, what it can do and where its limits are.
Care that stays connected
Reviews are planned around how you respond, your cycle timing and your next decision.
What assisted hatching may offer
- A targeted option for selected situations
- An honest discussion of the evidence
- No change to how your transfer feels
How your care is planned
Every stage answers three questions: what is happening, why it matters, and what comes next. The plan is reviewed at each stage and adjusted when needed.
Review past cycles and embryo reports
Decide whether there is a reason to consider hatching
Carry out hatching in the lab just before transfer
How assisted hatching works
On the day of transfer, or before freezing, the embryologist uses a precise laser to make a small opening or thin area in the shell. The embryo is then transferred or frozen in the usual way. The procedure takes minutes and happens entirely in the lab.
Who may consider it
It may be discussed for thawed embryos, older women, or embryos with a thick shell. Evidence for these uses is limited, so decisions are made case by case.
What to expect
You will not notice any difference on transfer day. If hatching is recommended, the reasons and any cost are explained beforehand, so you can decide with the full picture.
How Dr Jasdev works with you
He brings together experience in fertility and gynaecology, and he explains things in plain language. Advice is based on current evidence and on what matters to you. You will always know what the next step is and why it has been suggested. He sees couples from Kuala Lumpur and across Malaysia, as well as some who travel from neighbouring countries.
What to bring to your appointment
Your records help Dr Jasdev understand your history quickly, so more of the visit can go to your questions. If you cannot find everything, bring what you have.
- Previous embryology and transfer reports
- Questions about the evidence
- Details of any frozen embryos in storage
What couples often ask
Most couples arrive with several questions. These common ones can help you plan what to ask.
Will assisted hatching help us?
Can it harm the embryo?
Why is it offered to some couples and not others?
Does it cost extra?
Your questions about assisted hatching
What is assisted hatching?
It is a lab technique where a small opening is made in the embryo’s outer shell before transfer, to help it hatch and implant.
Who is it suitable for?
It is considered only in selected situations, such as some frozen embryos or embryos with a thick shell. It is not recommended routinely.
Does it need extra tests?
No. The embryologist assesses the shell as part of normal embryo grading.
Is it risky?
The risk of damaging the embryo with a laser is low. Some studies suggest a small rise in identical twins. These points are discussed before you decide.
Why see Dr Jasdev about assisted hatching?
He is clear about when it may be reasonable and when it is unlikely to help, so you avoid treatment you do not need.
