Urethral Bulking Injection

A gel injected around the urethra helps it close more firmly, to reduce leaks. It is a less invasive option with a quick recovery, though repeat treatment may be needed.

Urinary Incontinence

Pelvic floor care

A less invasive way to reduce stress leaks

Urethral bulking treats stress urinary incontinence. A bulking agent, a type of gel, is injected into the wall of the urethra. This helps the urethra close better when pressure rises, such as during coughing or exercise.

It suits women who want to avoid bigger surgery, or who are not yet ready for it.

Dr Jasdev explains how bulking compares with other treatments, including how long the effect may last.

01

Symptoms understood first

Leaking, bulging or discomfort is assessed carefully, including how much it affects your daily life.

02

Simpler options considered too

Pelvic floor exercises, physiotherapy and other treatments without surgery are discussed alongside operations.

03

Recovery planned in advance

You will know what to expect after the procedure and when your review is due.

What bulking injections may offer

  • Fewer leaks without major surgery
  • A short procedure with little time off
  • An option that does not rule out later surgery

How your care is planned

Each stage is explained so you understand the cause of your symptoms, your options and what recovery involves. You can take time to decide.

01

Confirm stress incontinence with a bladder diary and tests

02

Inject the bulking agent using a small camera

03

Review the effect and repeat if needed

How the procedure works

A small camera is passed into the urethra, and the gel is injected into its wall in a few places. It can be done under local anaesthetic, sedation or general anaesthetic. The procedure usually takes twenty to thirty minutes. No cuts are needed, as everything is done through the urethra.

Who may benefit

Women with stress incontinence who prefer a less invasive option, who are planning more children, or who are not suited to sling or colposuspension surgery.

What to expect

Most women go home the same day. Some stinging when passing urine is common for a day or two. The effect may lessen over time, and a repeat injection may be needed.
