Posterior Vaginal Repair – Rectocele
When the rectum bulges into the back wall of the vagina, a repair through the vagina can restore support and ease difficulty opening the bowels.
Pelvic Organ Prolapse
Restoring support to the back wall of the vagina
A rectocele is a prolapse of the rectum into the back wall of the vagina. It can cause a bulge, a feeling of incomplete emptying, a need to press on the vagina to open the bowels, or discomfort during sex. Posterior repair strengthens the tissue between the rectum and the vagina.
Bowel symptoms can be embarrassing to discuss. They are common, and there are good treatment options.
Dr Jasdev looks at bowel habits and diet as well as surgery, and involves bowel specialists when needed.
Symptoms understood first
Leaking, bulging or discomfort is assessed carefully, including how much it affects your daily life.
Simpler options considered too
Pelvic floor exercises, physiotherapy and other treatments without surgery are discussed alongside operations.
Recovery planned in advance
You will know what to expect after the procedure and when your review is due.
What posterior repair may offer
- Relief from the bulge and difficulty emptying the bowel
- Surgery through the vagina, with no tummy wound
- Care that considers your bowel health as a whole
How your care is planned
Each stage is explained so you understand the cause of your symptoms, your options and what recovery involves. You can take time to decide.
Examine the prolapse and review bowel symptoms
Discuss diet, physiotherapy, a pessary or surgery
Repair the back wall and support your recovery
How the surgery works
Under anaesthetic, a cut is made in the back wall of the vagina. The weakened tissue over the rectum is stitched to give firmer support, and the perineum may also be repaired. Your own tissue is used rather than mesh. The operation usually takes around an hour. A soft pack may be placed in the vagina for a few hours afterwards to reduce bleeding.
Who may benefit
Women with a rectocele causing a bulge, bowel emptying problems or discomfort, who have not improved enough with other measures. Good bowel habits, such as plenty of fibre and fluids, help protect the result.
What to expect
Most women stay one night. Keeping stools soft afterwards is important, and you may be given laxatives. Recovery takes around six weeks, and you will have a review visit to check healing.
