Pregnancy of Unknown Location
When a pregnancy test is positive but the scan cannot yet show where the pregnancy is, careful checks with blood tests keep you safe until things are clear.
Early Pregnancy Care
Keeping you safe while the picture becomes clear
A pregnancy of unknown location, or PUL, means a positive test but no pregnancy seen on scan, either in the womb or elsewhere. It may be a very early pregnancy in the womb, a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy. Blood tests over a few days help show which.
Not knowing is very hard. Clear communication and a safety plan help you through the waiting.
Dr Jasdev explains each result as it comes, and what it means.

Repeat blood tests after two days, with scans as needed
Confirm the outcome and plan next steps
How PUL is monitored
The pregnancy hormone hCG is measured in the blood, usually 48 hours apart. How the level changes helps predict whether the pregnancy is in the womb, miscarrying or ectopic. A repeat scan is done when the levels suggest the pregnancy should be visible. Most women with a PUL do not need surgery.
Who may benefit
Women with a positive test and a scan that does not show the pregnancy, especially with pain or bleeding. It is also common after fertility treatment, when tests are done very early.
What to expect
You will need a few visits for blood tests and scans. You will be given a clear list of warning signs and a number to call. The picture usually becomes clear within one to two weeks.

Your questions about pregnancy of unknown location
What does pregnancy of unknown location mean?
It means you have a positive pregnancy test, but the scan cannot yet show where the pregnancy is.
Who is monitored this way?
Women with a positive test and an unclear scan, particularly those with pain, bleeding or a history of ectopic pregnancy.
What tests are needed?
Blood tests for hCG, usually two days apart, and repeat scans when the levels suggest the pregnancy should be seen.
Is it dangerous?
Most women are safe with careful monitoring. The main concern is an ectopic pregnancy that has not yet been found, which is why the warning signs are explained clearly.
