Gentle care and clear choices after pregnancy loss

Miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy in the early months, most often in the first trimester. It is common and is usually caused by chromosome problems in the pregnancy, not by anything you did. Assessment confirms what is happening, and care helps the body complete the process safely.

Miscarriage is a real loss, whatever the stage. Your feelings, and your partner’s, deserve space.

Dr Jasdev explains your options gently and supports whichever choice feels right for you.

01

Your symptoms and dates are reviewed promptly, with scans and blood tests arranged when needed.

02

You will be told what the results show, what is still uncertain, and what happens next.

03

You will know when to come back and which symptoms need urgent attention.

What this care gives you

  • A clear diagnosis, with a repeat scan when unsure
  • A choice of natural, medical or surgical management
  • Care afterwards and advice for the future

How your care is planned

Early pregnancy can be an anxious time. Each step is explained so you know what is being checked and why. You will not be left waiting without a plan.

01

Confirm the diagnosis with a scan and blood tests

02

Discuss natural, medical or surgical management

03

Arrange care afterwards and talk about future plans

Your management options

Natural management means waiting for the pregnancy to pass on its own. Medical management uses tablets to help the process. Surgical management removes the pregnancy tissue under anaesthetic. Each option has benefits and risks, which are discussed so you can choose. Whichever option you choose, you can change your mind if your situation or feelings change.

Who may benefit

Women with bleeding or pain in early pregnancy, and those told a scan shows a pregnancy that is not developing. It also supports women who need care after a miscarriage.

What to expect

If the scan is uncertain, a repeat scan is arranged before any decision. You will have time to consider the options. Afterwards, you will know which symptoms need urgent attention and when to return for review.

Your questions about miscarriage

What is miscarriage management?

It is the care offered to confirm a pregnancy loss and help the body complete it safely, by natural, medical or surgical means.

Who needs it?

Women with a confirmed or suspected early pregnancy loss. The choice of management depends on your situation and preference.

What tests are needed?

An ultrasound and sometimes blood tests for the pregnancy hormone. A blood group check is done in some cases.

Is treatment painful or risky?

Cramping and bleeding are expected with natural and medical management. Surgery is done under anaesthetic. Risks such as infection or heavy bleeding are explained beforehand.
