Early Pregnancy Ultrasound

A scan in the first trimester confirms your due date, where the pregnancy is and how many babies there are, and checks early development.

Your first look at the pregnancy, explained clearly

An early pregnancy ultrasound is usually done between six and twelve weeks. Before about ten weeks, an internal scan gives a clearer picture. Later, a scan through the tummy is often enough.

The first scan is an emotional moment. Having each image explained helps you understand what you are seeing.

Dr Jasdev talks you through the scan and what it means for your care.

What the scan checks

The scan confirms the pregnancy is in the womb, measures the baby to date the pregnancy, and looks for a heartbeat. It also shows whether there is more than one baby. At around eleven to thirteen weeks, a scan can include early screening checks.

Who may benefit

Any woman in early pregnancy, especially after fertility treatment or a previous miscarriage, or with irregular periods that make the dates uncertain. It is also used when there is bleeding or pain. It also helps women who would like an early check after a previous loss.

What to expect

An internal scan is done with an empty bladder, and a tummy scan often with a fuller bladder. The scan takes around fifteen minutes. You will receive a report and know when your next check is due.

When is the next scan?

Your questions about early pregnancy scans

What is an early pregnancy ultrasound?

It is a scan in the first trimester that checks the location, size and heartbeat of the pregnancy, and dates it.

When should I have one?

Often between seven and nine weeks, or sooner if you have bleeding, pain, or a history of loss or ectopic pregnancy.

Is any preparation needed?

For an internal scan, an empty bladder helps. For a scan through the tummy, you may be asked to drink water beforehand.

Is the scan safe?

Yes. Ultrasound is considered safe in pregnancy, and an internal scan does not cause miscarriage.

Why see Dr Jasdev for your scan?

He explains each finding clearly and plans the next step with you, especially if anything needs rechecking.
